Suggested Uses:

Excellent for making into sweet aromatic braids. This grass is rhizhomatous and aggressive, but an excellent choice for erosion problems along shorelines.

Interesting Facts:

Food and Medicinal Uses: Coumarin, the compound that gives Sweetgrass its lovely fragrance, is an anticoagulant and can be toxic. It has been used as a body wash, a shampoo and as treatment for coughs, sore throat and venereal infections. It was also used to stop bleeding after giving birth, to purify after menstrual cycles and to cause abortions.

More Info: Dried and braided grass is used as in incense for purification. It was sometimes called the grass that never dies because it retains its fragrance long after being cut. It is often coiled into baskets. Its scientific name comes from the Greek words for sacred (hieros) and grass (chlo‘).
