Flowers:  Tubular flowers arranged in a raceme.
Leaves: The leaves are divided into a feather-like arrangement of many ovate or lance shaped leaflets.

 

Suggested Uses:

This is a wonderful plant for upland restoration projects that provides a food source for prairie wildlife and is a nitrogen-fixing plant. "Buffalo Bean" or "Ground plum" fruit at the base of the plants make it a real neat plant to use for any "Learning Garden"!

 

Interesting Facts

Medicinal Uses: Ground leaves were used to treat sore throat. The roots were boiled and used as a toothpaste and a treatment for bug bites. Dried powdered roots were used to stop bleeding.
Food Uses: The fruits are edible. They are very juicy and taste a little like pea pods. They were eaten by Native Americans and early settlers.
